Vanilla Extract

Ever wonder what’s in vanilla extract?  You will be surprised how simple it is and how it easy it is to make.  Are you ready for the big secret ingredient?  Well, there are only 2 ingredients. Vanilla beans and vodka. So, if you are a cheap alcoholic, you could drink this.  It probably doesn’t taste good though, but it’s great in baking.

For vanilla extract, begin by cutting open the vanilla bean pod along the length of the pod.  You will need 1 bean pod for 1/3 cup of vodka.  Put the vanilla bean and vodka in a container.  I used a glass jar.  If you’re not a regular baker, I think 1/3 cup would be enough for awhile.  I have 2/3 cup of extract that will hopefully last me for a few months.  This needs to sit for about 4-6 weeks before it’s strong enough for baking, shaken every week or so.

This vanilla extract is so much better than the stuff you buy in the grocery store.  It’s much cheaper, too.  Two beans cost $10 for a result of 2/3 cup of extract.  Whereas 1 cup costs around $20 for purchasing premade vanilla extract.  Enjoy this homemade vanilla extract in whatever you like, and taste the difference!
